The Practice of Groundedness by Brad Stulberg

Achievement often comes at a cost. Angst, restlessness, frayed relationships, exhaustion, and even substance abuse can be the unwanted side effects of an obsession with outward performance. While the high of occasional wins can keep you going for a while, playing into the always-on, never enough hustle culture ultimately takes a serious toll.

In The Practice of Groundedness, bestselling author Brad Stulberg shares a healthier, more sustainable model for success. At the heart of this model is groundedness–a practice that values presence over rote productivity, accepts that progress is nonlinear, and prioritizes long-term values and fulfillment over short-term gain. To be grounded is to possess a firm and unwavering foundation, a resolute sense of self from which deep and enduring, not shallow and superficial, success can be found. Groundedness does not eliminate ambition and striving; rather, it situates these qualities and channels them in more meaningful ways.

What's up @ WorkDNA.com

I've been thinking a lot this week about the disconnect between what companies say it's like to work there vs. what it's actually like to work there. As a candidate, what's the best way to suss out the truth? As a company, what's the best way to get candidates to trust what you say?

One potential solution is a neutral third party. Glassdoor fills this role, but suffers from the same problems any online review provider does. That's an entirely different trust problem, but a trust problem nonetheless.

The best option is to have a trusted friend who works at a company who can give you inside info. That doesn't scale, though, unless you have a lot of friends!

Maybe you can help me come up with an answer. What signals do you look for that make you trust what a company says about their culture?

"I’m putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do." - HAL 9000

"We no longer think of chairs as technology; we just think of them as chairs. But there was a time when we hadn't worked out how many legs chairs should have, how tall they should be, and they would often 'crash' when we tried to use them." - Douglas Adams
